Why
does Save A Pet charge $125 to adopt a dog?
We now charge $125 for our
dogs, because it cost us $15.00 to micro-chip them. The fee also
includes spay/neuter, current on all shots & heartworm negative.
Since our shelter is so full, if one of our dogs does not work out, we
can only take the dog back if we have available space. We hope that by chipping
our dogs, if one gets lost and is picked up by a shelter, the dog will
be scanned and an ID number will show, then the owner will be called .
This could certainly cut back on the number of dogs/cats being put to sleep. Unlike
the chip, collars come off or are taken off, but the chip is there
permanently and anyone with a scanner can find the owner.
Where
does Save A Pet find all of the rescued
animals?
Save A Pet is under contract
with the county to take pets from the pound. There are always new
dogs at the pound, but we can only choose a few because we have so
few foster homes available. Most of the foster homes already have
their own pets, and have only limited room to foster the rescued
pets. As pets are placed with new homes, more dogs are chosen form
the pound. The pound dog's need is urgent because they only have a short
time before they are put to sleep.

Why
hasn't Save A Pet been able to save more lives of the dogs at the pound?
We wish we could take more
from the pound, but we can't unless we find more people who want
pets. Everyone that we talk with already has 3 - 5 pets, some have
many more. The world is saturated with pets and pet owners still
won't spay or neuter and allow their pets to produce unwanted
offspring. Please don't buy a dog or breed your dog or cat until
there are no more homeless pets. Also, to be able to place more
from the pound, we must help by agreeing to foster dogs, and to go to
PetsMart to help place the dogs.

Do
you pick up unwanted dogs ?
Save A Pet does not come and
pick up dogs. We have a contract with the county to take
pets from the pound. We, by virtue of our contract, can not take
in strays, that is the function of our county dogcatcher. Also,
we are volunteers, most of us have full time jobs, and we have a limited
number of foster homes. There is no way that Save A Pet, nor any
volunteer organization, could pick up all the dogs that we are asked to
pick up.

Why
can't the county list the dogs that are in the pound each week in the
newspaper?
The county has 4 holding pens
for dogs that are picked up by animal control. There is not enough
time to put an ad in the paper because it is a weekly paper. It
doesn't take long to fill these pens, so when the holding pens are full,
the dogs have to be put to sleep. Having only 4 pens does not give
animal control the space to hold the dogs for a week or so. Normally the
vet is called once a week to put the unwanted dogs to sleep but,
if lack of space is a problem, he may be called more often. If you
have a lost dog, call Save A Pet or Animal Control immediately and let
them know that you have lost your dog.

What
does Save A Pet do with the donations that they receive?
All donations that Save A Pet
receives are used to provide care for the animals while they are waiting
to be placed in their forever home. Some of these expenses
are: transportation costs, kennel techs for every day of the week,
veterinarian expenses, heartworm pills, frontline, insurance, etc.
- it costs approximately an astounding $243 per day to care for
our rescued animals. The only people who receive any compensation
are our hourly kennel techs. Volunteers take our dogs for adoption
events, vet visits, and do administrative duties. If
you would like to be a part of this organization, please call 478-994-3882
to volunteer!

Why do Georgians need
to buy a dog and cat sterilization plate?
-
This license plate
would save the state money and lives by reducing the number of
animals: controlled, housed and put to death in
shelters; causing vehicular accidents involved in insurance
cases including claims; spreading zoonotic diseases, like
rabies.
-
$1 spent on sterilization
programs today will cave $20 by the year 2006.
-
It costs
approximately $105 of our tax money to kill each surplus animals.
-
Roughly $7.3 million
was spent in metro Atlanta in 1999 to destroy unwanted animals.
-
The Department of
Human Resources spends at least $3 million annually on rabies post
exposure treatment and testing.
-
Decreasing the number
of ferals and free-roaming domestic animals reducing losses
on: property, livestock and poultry; and wildlife and
the environment.
-
Half of the counties
in Georgia have no animal control.
-
Fewer animals mean
fewer new shelters must be built and fewer animal control
professionals must be hired.
-
14 states including
Texas, Virginia, Alabama and North Carolina have license plates that
provide funding for animal sterilization programs.
-
At least $60 million
annually is collected in sales tax for dog and cat food alone in
Georgia. No sterilization education or programs are provided
and less that $1 million annually is spent for companion animal
protection statewide.
Thanks
to the Humane Association of Georgia, Inc. for sharing this
information with us.
Did
you Know?
:
The
$60 million collected in sales tax from the sale of dog/cat food is
currently going into the general budget fund. If you think more
than $1 million of this money should go into a special fund for the
benefit of companion animals, let your legislators know.
